Why is the status of new contacts being updated to Active automatically?

This happens because of the workflow Update Contacts with Organisation details. In this workflow, the Status field is included in the list of fields to be updated for contacts. Since the linked organization’s Status is set to Active, the workflow updates the associated contact’s Status to Active as well.
